How to Register a Boat in Minnesota

Minnesota is known for its many beautiful lakes and waterways, making it a popular destination for boaters. If you own a boat in Minnesota, it's important to understand the state's boating laws and regulations, including the requirement to register your boat with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). In this blog post, we'll walk you through the process of registering your boat in Minnesota.

Step 1: Gather the necessary information

Before you can register your boat, you'll need to gather some important information about the vessel. This includes the make, model, year, and hull identification number (HIN) of the boat. The HIN can be found on the boat's registration or title, and it serves as a unique identifier for the vessel or stamped onto the starboard-stern (back-right) corner of the hull. You’ll also need some additional documentation, including:

·        If the boat is used, a completed bill of sale, previous registration, and previous title signed to you (if applicable)

·        If the boat is new, the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin

·        Watercraft Title and Registration Application, available on the Minnesota State Government’s website, mn.gov, here.

·        Registration and titling fees

·        Proof of sales tax paid. If you haven’t paid sales taxes on the boat, you will have to do so when you complete your registration application.

Step 2: Complete the registration application

If you are registering a boat for the first time, you will have to do so in person. You can register your boat at any Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Service office location, or at the DNR License Center located at 500 Lafayette Rd, St. Paul, MN 55155. Step 3: Pay the registration fee

The registration fee for a boat in Minnesota is based on the length and type of the vessel. In addition to the registration fee, you will also need to pay at $10.60 Aquatic Invasive Species Surcharge. The fee breakdown for motorized pleasure craft (not including personal watercrafts) is listed below. For a full breakdown of registration fees, visit the DNR website here.

Length

Registration Fee

Less than 17’

$18

17’ – 19’

$27

19’ – 26’

$45

26’ – 40’

$67.50

Over 40’

$90

Step 4: Display the registration decals

After your registration is processed, you'll receive a registration number and two registration decals. The registration numbers should be displayed in block-type font at least 3 inches tall, in a contrasting color from the hull, on the front half of the boat on either side, just below the gunwale. The registration decal should be placed in line with the registration number and at least 3 inches behind.

Step 5: Renew your registration

Boat registrations in Minnesota are valid for three years. You'll receive a renewal notice in the mail approximately two months before your registration is set to expire. The renewal process is simpler than initial registration. To renew your registration, you can complete the process online or by mail.

Conclusion

By following these steps and staying informed about Minnesota's boating laws, you can ensure that you're safely and legally enjoying your time on the state's beautiful lakes and waterways.
