If you're a boat owner in Pennsylvania, it's important to
make sure that your vessel is registered with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat
Commission (PFBC) and compliant with state laws. Registering a boat in
Pennsylvania is a straightforward process and can be done by following a few
simple steps.
Before you can register your boat in Pennsylvania, you'll
need to gather some essential documents. These include:
·
Proof of ownership including a bill of sale and
a title assigned to you
·
A completed Boat Registration/Title Application
(Form REV-336), available from the PFBC’s website here.
·
Payment for the registration fee
Once you've gathered all the required documents, you'll need
to complete the Boat Registration/Title Application. This form is available on
the PFBC’s website here
and can be completed online or in print.
On the application form, you'll need to provide information
about yourself, the boat, and any co-owners. You'll also need to include the
boat's hull identification number (HIN), which can typically be found on the boat's
previous registration papers or either stamped or on a plaque affixed to the transom
(rear) of the boat.
You will also need to pay some fees to PFBC to register your
boat. The registration fees vary depending on the length of your boat. The full
registration fee schedule is listed below, as of 2023.
Length | Fee |
Less than 16’ | $26 |
16’ – 20’ | $39 |
Longer than
20’ | $52 |
Unpowered
Boats (no motor) | $22 |
Commercial
Passenger Boats | $50 |
In addition to the registration fee, you will also have to
pay a $30 titling fee to title your boat and a $20 lien filing fee if you have
a lien on your boat as well. All fees must be paid by either check or money order
and can be made payable to PFBC.
Once you've completed the application, you'll need to submit
it along with your payment and any additional required documents to the PFBC.
You must submit your application in person at local PFBC Regional Office (find
the nearest location here)
or an authorized issuing agent (find the nearest agent here),
or by mail. If you are submitting your application by mail, you need to send
it, along with any required accompanying documentation, including payment, to
the following address:
PFBC
Division
of Licensing and Registration
PO
Box 68900
Harrisburg,
PA, 17106-8900
Once you've completed the registration process and paid the
fees, you'll need to display your registration number and decal on your vessel.
The registration number should be displayed on the forward half of your boat on
both sides, using block letters that are at least 3 inches high. The registration
decal should be displayed in line with the registration numbers, three inches
behind on the hull.
Congratulations! You're now ready to enjoy all the fun and
adventure that Pennsylvania's waterways have to offer. Remember to always
operate your boat safely and responsibly, and to follow all applicable laws and
regulations.
