How to Register a Boat in South Carolina

If you live in South Carolina and own a boat, it's important to know how to register it properly. Any boat powered by a motor must be registered with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). Boats are required to be registered with the state and display the registration numbers and decals while in use. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the process of registering a boat in South Carolina.

Step 1: Determine if Your Boat Needs to be Registered

All motorized boats, including sailboats, must be registered with the state of South Carolina if they are operated on public waters. The only exception to this rule is if your boat is registered in another state and will only be used in South Carolina for less than 60 consecutive days.

Step 2: Gather the Required Documents

To register your boat in South Carolina, you will need the following documents:

·        A completed Watercraft/Outboard Motor Application, available from SCDNR’s website here.

·        Proof of ownership (such as a bill of sale or a previous registration)

·        Proof of payment of personal property tax paid to your county

·        A copy of the current registration (if transferring ownership)

·        A title properly assigned to you. If you do not have a title, you will need to title at the same time you register your boat.

·        Either a pencil tracing or printed photograph of the Hull Identification Number (HIN). This can be found either on the current registration or title, or stamped on the transom (rear) of your boat.

Step 3: Submit Your Application and Pay the Fees

You can submit your boat registration application by mail or in person at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. If you are submitting your application in person, you can do so at your nearest SCDNR office. If you are mailing your application, mail to the following address:

SCDNR Attn: T&R

PO Box 167,

Columbia, SC

29202

You also have the option to register your boat entirely online. You can do so here.

The registration and titling fees vary based on the size of your boat, and where you purchased it, whether in South Carolina or another state. The full fee breakdown can be found on the Watercraft/Outboard Motor Application. This can be paid via check or money order made payable to SCDNR.

Step 4: Display Your Registration Numbers and Decals

Once your boat is registered, you will receive a registration certificate and a set of registration numbers and decals. You must display the registration numbers and decals on your boat's hull, on both sides of the bow, in a contrasting color. The numbers must be at least three inches tall, and the decals must be displayed within six inches of the registration numbers.

Step 5: Renew Your Registration Annually

Your boat registration in South Carolina is valid for one year, and you must renew it annually. You can renew your registration online, by mail, or in person at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Conclusion

In conclusion, registering your boat in South Carolina is a straightforward process. By following these steps, you can ensure that you are legally permitted to operate your boat on South Carolina's beautiful waterways. Remember to renew your registration annually and display your registration numbers and decals while in use. Enjoy your time on the water!
